COLUMBIA, Ky. - Senior Karlee Despres threw her fifth no-hitter of her career in Davenport's (Mich.) first game of the day against No. 14 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) on Saturday. Despres allowed only two runners to reach base and recorded 12 strikeouts in route to the 1-0 victory. Davenport defeated St. Catharine's (Ky.) 8-1 in game two to finish out the Campbellsville/Lindsey Wilson Classic and improve to 14-5 on the season.
After walking the first batter of the game, Despres settled in on the mound and recorded strikeouts from nine of the next 12 batters. With the game still tied 0-0 after five complete innings, Katie Cornman sent her fourth home run of the season over the centerfield fence in the sixth to put the Panthers up 1-0.
The one run from Cornman was all Despres needed as she sent down the Blue Raiders in order in both the sixth and seventh innings to secure the win. The senior pitcher finished with 12 strikeouts on the day and improved to 3-0 on the mound for DU.
"Being my first game back (after playing basketball) I could feel the fatigue on the mound early," Despres said. "But that just made me focus on using my legs more which was key to helping my pitches stay consistent and move the entire game. Lindsey Wilson is a great team and I just wanted to do my part to put our team in a position to be successful."
