Cal State San Marcos Blanks Shorter (Ga.) 2-0 in Bracket Play

May 23, 2011

GULF SHORES, Ala.(Box Score) Cal State-San Marcos (44-9) pitcher Brenna Sandberg continued her dominance with a two-hit shutout over Shorter (Ga.) (46-14) as the Cougars won 2-0 in bracket play at the 2011 NAIA Softball National Championship. The senior from Santee, Calif., has thrown every inning in the tournament for the Cougars and her numbers are staggering. She has tossed four shutouts and allowed just four total hits in 26.0 innings of work. Her 34 total strikeouts, after six today, is second most among pitchers in this year’s event.

Cal State San Marcos will play California Baptist, who was a 1-0 winner over Oklahoma City earlier today. That first pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. CDT.

Shorter moves to the loser’s bracket and faces Oklahoma City at 12:30 p.m.

The lone runs for the Cougars were courtesy of Derrisha Lacey in the top of third inning. After a single by Kaitlin McGinley, Lacey pushed a grounder that was misplayed by the shortstop. The ball rolled to the fence and Lacey used her speed to round the bases.

The 2-0 lead was plenty for Sandberg. She moved to 40-8 on the season with her gem. She walked one and gave up just two hits.

McGinley and Alyssa Dronenburg led the Cougars with two hits apiece. Both offenses tallied just eight combined hits.

Jessica Womble and Brooke Bryan were able to manage the only hits for Shorter.

The 31st annual event is played at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
