Two-Out Sixth Inning Rally Sends Falcons Past Panthers

GULF SHORES, Ala.(Box Score) Notre Dame (Ohio) (23-21) outlasted Davenport (Mich.) (38-18) 4-2 on the final day of pool play action at the 2011 NAIA Softball National Championship Saturday at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

 

Notre Dame improves to 1-2 in pool play, while Davenport drops to 0-3. The top team from each pool advances to an eight-team double-elimination bracket that begins May 23 at 10 a.m. CDT.

 

Christine Camp (7-6) went the distance and limited the Panthers to four hits and two runs while fanning three and walking three to get the win for the Falcons. Sam Cole (19-10) took the loss for Davenport after giving up four runs on five hits in 5.1 innings of work.

 

The game was tied up after five innings of play as Davenport put up single tallies in the first and fifth innings, while Notre Dame plated a pair in the fourth.

 

The Falcons then won the game with two runs on three hits in the sixth inning. Felisha Jones started the rally with a one-out single up the middle and Brooke Hobson drew a walk. Karlee Despres came in to relieve Cole and struck out a batter before Charisse Colston and Ashley Harbarger came through with two-out RBI-singles.

 

Jones finished 2-for-4 with one RBI for Notre Dame as six different hitters recorded a hit. Heather Brusokas and Brianna Carpenter each finished 1-for-3 with one RBI for Davenport.
