Lubbock Christian (Texas) Uses Offense to Power Past Simpson (Calif.), 14-6 on Day One

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps (Texas) (51-9) run-ruled Simpson (Calif.) (28-17) 14-6 in pool play action at the 2011 NAIA Softball National Championship Thursday evening. The 31st Annual event is being held at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

 

In a game featuring 27 combined hits, Lubbock Christian scored in every inning but the third to pull out the victory over the Red Hawks.

 

Kim Frazier finished 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs for the Lady Chaps, Priscilla FaGaines went 3-for 4 with 3 RBIs from the leadoff spot, and Andrea Argee, Amanda Parsons and Kayla Van Dieren each added a pair of RBIs. Van Dieren started the scoring with a two-run home run in the first inning.

 

Morgan Davis, Brooke Downs and Paige Gomez each tallied a pair of hits for the Red Hawks, while Downs drove in a pair.

 

Meagan Navarrette improved to 18-0 on the season after getting the win despite giving up six runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings of action.

 

Three homers in the first two innings of play powered Lubbock Christian to a 6-0 start, and they held off a late Simpson rally by scoring in each of the final three frames.

 

The Red Hawks batted around in the fifth inning to plate four runs in a rally attempt as the team recorded six hits. Downs started the inning with a RBI-single and Kristen Deal capped it with a pinch-hit RBI-hit. That cut the lead to 10-6, before the Lady Chaps finished off the run-rule win with a pair of runs in each of the final two innings.

 

Lubbock Christian will face Simon Fraser (B.C.) Friday at Noon CDT at Field 4, while Simpson will battle Reinhardt (Ga.) at 5 pm at the same field.
