Box Score

GULF SHORES, Ala. – Shorter (Ga.) (44-13) received solid pitching from Libby Munson and defeated Davenport (Mich.) (38-16), 3-1 in pool-place action on day one of the NAIA Softball National Championship. The event is being held at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

In a game that saw six combined errors, Munson was a star in the circle. The senior from Suwanee, Ga., pitched all seven innings to improve to 25-5 on the year. She allowed just one unearned run on two hits. She needed 118 pitches to notch the win.

Amanda Albertson came up with a clutch hit for Shorter in the second inning. With two outs, she laced a single to short stop, which scored Brooke Bryan. Davenport responded with a single run, courtesy of a RBI-single from Debra Burton, in the bottom-half of the inning.

But that was all the Davenport offense for the rest of the day.

The game-winning run was produced by the Hawks’ Anna Frazee. After she led off the fourth frame with a single, she came around to score on a Bre Johnson single. An insurance run was added in the sixth inning for the 3-1 lead. Johnson finished her day with a team-high two hits.

Sam Cole took the loss for the Panthers to fall to 19-9 on the year. She went 7.0 innings giving up three runs (one earned) on seven hits. She struck out six and walked two.

The Hawks will take on Notre Dame (Ohio) on Friday at 6 p.m. CDT in pool-play action. Davenport will face Central Baptist (Ark.) at 1 p.m.
