May 19, 2011
GULF SHORES, Ala. - Belhaven (Miss.) (45-10) shut out Bellevue (Neb.) (31-18) by a 3-0 score in pool-play action on day one of the NAIA Softball National Championship. The event is being held at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
Annalee Carr drove in the first two runs with a single in the third inning after it appeared as if Bellevue pitcher Amanda Neumann had squelched the rally by cutting down Lizzy Hess' attempt to score from third on a comebacker. Rian O'Bannon added an insurance run in the seventh with a two-out triple, scoring Christina Jaques from first.
Belhaven pitcher Sarah Burns went the distance for the shutout, recording seven strikeouts and allowing five hits but no walks. She improved to 31-7 on the year.
The loss went to Amanda Neumann (22-9), who allowed nine hits in her seven innings of work.
Christina Jaques and Lizzy Hess each had two hits for Belhaven, and Jaques added two stolen bases as well.
Jessica Guyle had three of Bellevue's five hits, batting a perfect 3-for-3 effort on the afternoon.
On Friday, Belhaven will take on Minot State (N.D.) at 12:30 p.m. CDT and Bellevue battles Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) at 5:30 p.m. in pool-play action.
