With Cal State San Marcos softball’s sweep of Vanguard University (Calif.) on Wednesday (April 20), head coach Dave Williams reached a milestone that few coaches do, recording his 600th career win.

“It’s a tribute to the many great assistant coaches and players that have committed to work hard and excel,” said Williams of the accomplishment.

Since he began his career at Point Loma Nazarene in 1998, Williams has had tremendous success.  Taking over a team that won 13 games its previous season, Williams’ squad won 33 in 1998 and never looked back.  Not only did his teams never have a losing season during his 12-year stint at Point Loma, they never won less than 65% of their games.  Between 2001 and 2009, Williams’ Point Loma teams qualified for the NAIA National Champions every year, finishing runner-up in 2002 and 2007, and third place in 2006 and 2008.

That success has continued to Cal State San Marcos, where he led the Cougars to a program-best 40-15 record in 2010, and a ninth place finish in their first-ever NAIA National Championship appearance.  This year’s team is well-positioned to surpass even that success, currently holding a 36-6 record and a #3 national ranking.

In total, Williams’ record as a collegiate coach is currently 600-191, giving him a robust .753 winning percentage.
