MOBILE, Ala. -- No. 2 William Carey (Ala.) wrapped up the 2011 regular season with a doubleheader sweep of No. 8 Mobile (Ala.), Thursday afternoon (April 21) at the UM Softball Field. With the sweep Carey finishes the regular season with a record of 49-4 and 17-3 in SSAC West Division action.

In game one WCU got to the point quickly scoring three runs in the top of the first inning to open a 3-0 lead. Judy Barber started the scoring with an RBI double to left and Shana Gunter and Jasmine Shelby each added RBI singles for the Lady Crusaders in the inning.

Mobile cut the lead to 3-1 thanks to Mayles Rodriguez’s solo home run in the third but Carey answered right back with an RBI single from Tan Montgomery in the fourth to put WCU up 4-1. Mobile added runs in the fourth and fifth inning to cut the lead to 4-3 but starter Anna Ard settled back into a groove and cruised over the final two innings to improve to 26-1 on the season.

In game two, Jeana Erickson hit a two run home run in the first inning and Judy Barber added a two run double in the third as Carey rolled to a 5-0 win.

Kelsey Jo Smith allowed just two hits and struck out three to improve to 8-0 on the season.

Carey returns to action next week in the Southern States Athletic Conference Championships in Columbus, Ga. Game times and bracket will be released on Saturday.
