Blazers Wrap up Belhaven Bash II with Two More Wins

RIDGELAND, Miss. - The Belhaven (Miss.) softball team successfully capped off the Belhaven Bash II Tournament with a 9-1 win over Mid-Continent University (Ky.) and an 8-0 shutout of Williams Baptist College (Ark.) at Freedom Ridge Park Saturday. The Blazers' Sarah Burns made the day extra special by tossing a perfect game against Williams Baptist running her season record in the circle to 4-0. Belhaven is now 10-0 to begin the 2010 season.

Belhaven 9, Mid-Continent 1
The Blazers struck for two runs in the top of the first inning with the aid of only one hit. Jessica Eggold reached base on a fielder's choice with one out, stole second base, moved to third on a groundout by Christina Jaques and crossed the plate on a passed ball. Tiffany Ansley was walked, stole second and came in on Heather Pace's RBI single.

Belhaven starting pitcher Rebecca Rousseau shutdown the Cougars in their half of the first frame and to get the Blazers back in the box for four more runs in the second. Eggold collected two RBIs on a base hit to right field and Ansley brought home the other two runs in the frame on a base hit to center field.

Trailing 6-0, Mid-Continent scratched across its only run on the game on an Amber Rapert single down the right-field line.

The Blazers added a run in the fourth on a RBI single by Ansley. In the top of the fifth inning, Belhaven pushed its lead to 9-1 thanks to a Britney Webb two-run double.

Ansley led the Blazers at the plate with a pair of singles and three RBI. Eggold went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Webb and Heather Pace each brought in one runner. Webb ran every time she got a chance as she collected three stolen bases against the Cougars. Rousseau got the win for Belhaven in the circle pitching the first four innings allowing one run on three hits and fanning six.

Kelly Fougerousse took the loss for Mid-Continent, surrendering six runs on three hits with only two of the six runs being earned.

Belhaven 8, Williams Baptist 0
Behind an error free defense, Belhaven junior Sarah Burns' tossed a five-inning perfect game. Burns was nearly unhittable, striking out eight of the 15 batters that she faced. In four appearances this season, she has 27 strikeouts and an ERA of 0.72.

Belhaven's offense did not disappoint either, delivering three runs in the bottom of the first inning on RBI singles by Eggold, Ansley and Heather Pace.

The Blazers struck again with a trio of runs in the bottom of the fourth frame behind an RBI single from Eggold and a two-run home run by Christina Jaques. Webb drove in one run and Chelsea Randle stole home to push across two more runs and take the game.

Eggold and Jaques led the Blazers at the plate driving in a pair of runs each. Eggold, Ansley and Heather Pace each had two hits in the victory. Webb took three bases to run her total to 18. April McCampbell took the loss for Williams Baptist (2-2), surrendering six runs on eight hits in four innings of work.

Belhaven will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to NCAA Division II Delta State University for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
