ROME, Ga. -- The 18th-ranked Shorter (Ga.) College Lady Hawks softball team split an important Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday (April 21) afternoon against Lee (Tenn.) University, losing the first game 3-0, before shutting out the Lady Flames in the second game, 4-0.

In the first game, the two teams stranded a total 13 runners on base, and had a combined eight hits, with Shorter (33-13, 22-6 SSAC) having two and Lee (31-11, 23-5 SSAC) having six. Johana Gomez hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to put Lee up 1-0, and an RBI double and sacrifice fly put two runs on the board in the sixth inning, to give Lee the 3-0 win.

Shorter's two hits came from Amanda Albertson and Dandi Ammons. Gomez got the shutout win for Lee, pitching the complete seven-inning game, striking out seven. Shorter's Becca Thomas received the loss, pitching five innings, for six hits, three earned runs and two walks, while striking out three.

The second game went nearly opposite of the first as Shorter had eight hits to Lee's two hits. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lady Hawks' Emily Clements hit an RBI single up the middle to take the 1-0 lead - proving to be enough for the win.

In the bottom of the fifth, Shorter put three more insurance runs on the board. Ammons struck first with an RBI single up the middle, and an RBI double from Elisabeth Barber and an RBI single from Amanda Rogers made it a 4-0 ballgame.

Barber finished the game a perfect 2-for-2 with an RBI, and Rogers was 2-for-3 with a RBI.

Last week's SSAC Pitcher of the Week Libby Munson got the shutout victory, pitching seven innings for two hits and three walks, while striking out seven. Lee's Brittany Balough got the loss.

Shorter continues in non-conference play tomorrow at 6 p.m. in their final home games of the season against Covenent College.
