Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) Advances to the Loser's Bracket Final

DECATUR, Ala. - Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) knocked off California Baptist, 8-5, in eight innings to advance to the loser's bracket final at the 2008 NAIA Softball National Championship.

 

Amanda Addie went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Donie Thomas batted 1-for-3 while driving in three runs.  Melissa Gomez pitched five innings for the win and scored two runs on offense.

 

Cal Baptist scored first in the bottom of first inning on a homerun to center field by Chantal Millard.  The Sea Lions answered with five runs in the third.  Addie led off the inning with an infield single.  After a sacrifice bunt Paige Powell walked and Gomez singled to drive in the first run.  Kayla Luttmers followed with a single to drive in the second run before Allie Boeckelman load the bases with a single.  Thomas doubled to deep right-center to empty the bases to make it 5-1 with two outs.

 

The Lancers got two runs back in the fourth on a two-run homerun by Allison Dennis after Erin Moore double to right-center.  CBU tied the game at five with two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh with two outs.

 

Point Loma Nazarene went back on top in the eight when Gomez was hit by pitch, moved to third on Boeckelman's single and came around to score on a ground out.  The Sea Lions added two more runs on Addie's bases loaded single.

 

Point Loma Nazarene will take on Lubbock Christian (Texas) in the loser's bracket final at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21 for a chance to advance to the championship game.

 

California Baptist will end its season with 60-8 overall record.
