Lady Rams Pick Up Big Wins

April 11, 2008

MOBILE, Ala-- The 10th-ranked University of Mobile softball team picked up a pair of big wins over visiting #5 William Carey Thursday evening in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action. Mobile used pitching and defense to take the opener 4-1 and then mashed 3 homers in the finale en route to an 8-3 victory.

The opener was a 1-1 ball game through the first 4.5 innings of play until the Lady Rams came up to bat in the bottom of the 5th and used 4 hits to plate 3 runs to take the ball game.

Singles from Jennifer Gomez, Jineth Pimentel and Abby Campbell loaded the bases with only 1 out in the frame to set the stage. After Yaicey Sojo singled in a run on a infield hit, the Lady Rams plated a pair on a grounder to short. Pimentel scored on the fielder's choice from Taylor Lee Phillips and then Campbell crossed home on a wild throw trying to get Pimentel.

Ginger Reeser cruised from there, as the lefty scattered 7 hits over 7 innings and fanned 7 while allowing 0 walks to pick up the win. Devin King took the loss after allowing 4 runs in 5 innings of work.

Sojo went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI at the top of the Mobile order and Jineth Pimentel finished 2-for-2. Leah Kilpatrick went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead William Carey.

Game 2: Mobile 8 - William Carey 3

In game two, both starters were chased by the 3rd inning and Nikki Madden got the best of Brittany Fuller in relief.

Madden picked up the win for Mobile, going 5 scoreless innings in relief, allowing only 3 hits and fanning 5. Meanwhile, Mobile used the long ball to provide the run support for the victory.

Jineth Pimentel stroked a solo homer in the 2nd to give Mobile a short-lived 3-0 lead, before the Lady Saders plated 3 in the top of the 3rd on a 2-run double from Shelly Berry and a RBI single from Megan Pittman.

Then, Mobile put its hitting shoes on in the 5th and 6th innings, scoring 5 runs to run away with the victory. The big blow came in the 5th, when a Bree Neidhardt error kept the inning alive and Kelyn Mendoza blasted a no-doubt 3-run homer to left-center. Yaicey Sojo added a solo shot to lead off the 6th.

Sojo finished 3-for-4 with a homer, Suarez finished 2-for-4, Mendoza finished 1-for-3 with a 3-run homer, and Pimentel finished 3-for-3 with a homer. Mobile moves to 25-7 overall and 3-3 in the GCAC, 1-game behind leader Belhaven.

Berry went 1-for-4 with 2 RBI and Pittman finished 1-for-3 with 1 RBI. William Carey drops to 28-7 overall and 3-3 in GCAC play.

The Lady Rams return to action Saturday, April 12th at noon when Thomas University visits for a double header.
