Houston Baptist Scores In the Seventh For Win

Houston Baptist University scores two runs in bottom of the seventh to record 3-2 victory over Trevecca Nazarene University at 2007 NAIA Softball National Championship

DECATUR, Ala. - Houston Baptist University scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Trevecca Nazarene University Saturday (May 19) morning at the 2007 NAIA Softball National Championship being played at Wilson Morgan Park.

The No. 6 Huskies improved to 47-11 overall and to 2-1 in Pool C while the No. 5 Trojans fell to 57-9 and 2-1. Both teams wrap up pool play later today. HBU will face Shorter College at 3 p.m. while TNU will take on Thomas (Ga.) University at 5:30 p.m.

Trevecca Nazarene took a 2-0 lead on RBI singles by Chelsea Bailey and Ashley McCool in the top of the third while the Huskies got a run back in the bottom half of the inning on Melissa Wright's RBI single.

It would stay that way until the bottom of the seventh. Hannah Garza started the rally with a one-out double down the left-field line. Erika Vargas tied the game at 2 when her single to center field scored Christina LeCompte, who pinch ran for Garza. Vargas moved to third on the play on Bailey's wild throw. She later scored the winning run on a wild pitch by Brittiany Johnson.

Cheri Wood (26-6) earned the complete-game victory for the Huskies while reliever Stephanie Fisher (18-5) absorbed the loss.
