Union (Tenn.) Blasts Home Run Record for Third Consecutive Season

JACKSON, Tenn. - For the third straight season, the Union University Lady Bulldogs broke the school record for home runs in a season. In the double-header sweep over the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) 9-4 and 7-6, Union popped two homers to give the team 39 for the season. The record entering this year was 37.

In 2005, Union hit 30 home runs which broke the old record of 25. Then last season, Union hit 37 home runs to set the mark again. Union now has 39 team homers with five regular season games plus the postseason to play.

Brandi Hoffman currently leads Union with 11 home runs. Ashley Walters has 10 and Amy Chatham has seven homers. The Union record for home runs in a season is 14.

On Tuesday, Union defeated Cumberland 9-4 in game one. Union's Amy Chatham and Ashley Walters each hit homers to spark the Union offense. In game two, Union fell behind 2-0, then rallied for four runs to take a 4-2 lead. Cumberlands answered back with a grand slam to take a 6-4 lead. However, Union rallied once again with three runs in the top of the seventh to earn their 31st win of the season.

Union is now 31-14 on the season and ranked No. 4 in Region XI. The Lady Bulldogs re 19-8 in the TranSouth Conference with five games to play. Union is just one game behind second place Martin Methodist College (Tenn.). Union and Martin Methodist will close out the regular season on Sunday, April 29 with a single game that is made up from and earlier rainout.
