No. 4 Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) Tosses Back-to-Back Perfect Games

Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - No. 4 Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) scored 20 runs in a twinbill sweep of California Lutheran on Wednesday but the story was the back-to-back no-hitters tossed by starting pitchers KC Robertson and Kira Wommer. The two hurlers did not allow a single Regal hit or walk in 10 innings of play as the Sea Lions recorded a pair of 10-0 wins.

Neither pitcher got the opportunity for a seven-inning no-hitter, however, because both contests were halted in the fifth inning due to the eight-run mercy rule.

Robertson improved to 10-3 with a five-inning stint in the opener. Only a pair of PLNU errors prevented the senior from achieving a perfect game.

Wommer (2-0) was making just her second start in a Sea Lion uniform. The freshman faced 15 batters in the nightcap and sat all 15 down despite facing 3-0 counts three times, including the first batter of the game.

The duo recorded just five strikeouts combined. Instead they relied on the Sea Lion defense to make plays behind them. The closest the Regals came to a hit was in the third inning of game two when Nikki Campbell hit a hard grounder up the middle. PLNU second baseman Vanessa Parra made a back hand stop then turned and fired to first base just ahead of Campbell to preserve the perfect game.

The few other balls hit hard by California Lutheran on Wednesday afternoon were right at the Point Loma defense.

The Sea Lion offense, meanwhile, opened up the doubleheader by plating seven first-inning runs and never looked back. PLNU would go on to score once in the second and three more times in the third for the 10-0 final.

It took a bit more time in game two but the Sea Lions would eventually get to Regal pitching for seven runs in the third inning and then tack on three more runs in the fourth.

Paige Powell led the PLNU 20-hit attack by going 4-for-6 over the two games with four runs scored and three RBI. Amanda Addie went 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Allie Boeckelman drove in four runs and Amber Randel contributed three RBI.

"We haven't been playing our best lately," said PLNU Coach Dave Williams. "It was fun to see KC and Kira in control today. The entire team played well. Hopefully these games today will give us some momentum as we head into the second half of conference play."

The Sea Lions improved to 24-6 with the sweep while California Lutheran fell to 15-8.
