Lyon College (Ark.) to start softball

Oct. 26, 2006

BATESVILLE, Ark. - Lyon College (Ark.) raised the curtain on the school's latest athletic endeavor Friday, announcing the start of competitive women's fast-pitch softball at the school, beginning in the 2007-08 academic year. Varsity play would begin in the spring of 2008.

The college's Board of Trustees approved the varsity women's softball program at its meeting Friday on the Lyon campus. The proposal had also received the blessing of the Education Committee and Building and Grounds Committee of the board.

"Softball is going to be an exciting addition to our program," said Lyon Athletics Director Terry Garner. "It's grown in popularity in the high schools over the years and it should be a great opportunity for us to offer prospective student-athletes."

Lyon is a member of the NAIA and the TranSouth Conference. Nine other schools in the conference -- Bethel College (Tenn.), Crichton College (Tenn.), Cumberland University (Tenn.), Freed-Hardeman University (Tenn.), Lambuth University (Tenn.), Martin Methodist College (Tenn.), Mid-Continent College (Ky.), Trevecca Nazarene University (Tenn.), and Union University (Tenn.) - currently have fast-pitch softball programs in place.

"We shouldn't have any problems filling a schedule," said Garner. "Our plan going forward is to hire a coach as soon as possible, put resources in place to recruit athletes and get a facility built on campus."

The women's softball program joins seven other intercollegiate sports offered at Lyon: baseball (men), basketball (men, women), cross country (men, women), golf (men, women), soccer (men, women), tennis (men, women), and volleyball(women). Lyon also offers an extensive intramural program.
