Pool Play Concludes at Softball

DECATUR, Ala. - Pool play at the 2006 NAIA Softball National Championship concluded with one tournament record being tied twice amd eight teams emerging for a double-elimination bracket.  Games are being played at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex and will resume on Monday at 9 a.m. (Central).

Senior Mayret Perez helped the University of Mobile (Ala.) go undefeated in pool as she tied the tournament record for home runs in a game. On opening day, Perez smacked two dingers against Ottawa University (Kan.) en route to a 10-2 victory. Later that same day, Casandrah Carreon of California Baptist also hit two out of the park in a 9-2 victory against Tiffin University (Ohio).  The record was set in 1997 by Oklahoma City University standout Bobbi Towers.

The top two teams from each of the four pools advanced to Monday's double-elimination bracket.  Mobile stayed undefeated in Pool A on a walk-off home run by Angelica Yrigoyen in the bottom of the 11th inning to best Point Loma Nazarene University (Calif.) 1-0.  The loss was the only one for the Sea Lions as they joined Mobile in advancing.

Pool B saw #7 Lee University (Tenn.) upset #2 California Baptist 6-1 to go undefeated in pool play.  California Baptist advanced as well with a 3-1 pool-play record.

No. 3-seeded Oklahoma City University was the first to advance from Pool C with a 4-0 record while #6 Concordia University (Calif.) followed with just one loss - a 12-2 loss to OCU.

Defending national champion Simon Fraser emerged from Pool D tied with unseeded Trevecca Nazarene Univeristy (Tenn.) at 3-1 to advance to the round of eight.
