BURNABY, B.C. - The Simon Fraser University (B.C.) women's softball program is pleased to announce that six members of the SFU Clan women's softball team have been invited to participate in the 2006 Canadian National Team's selection camp, scheduled for Jan 3-7, 2006, in Plant City, Florida.

Freshman Rebecca Gill (Surrey, B.C.), sophomore transfer Melanie Matthews (Langley, B.C.), senior Rachel Schill (Kitchener, Ont.), junior Rebecca Hartley (Richmond, B.C.), junior Erin McLean (Whitby, Ont.) and senior Erin Gee (Burnaby, B.C.) have been chosen to attend the five-day selection camp. Women's softball head coach Mike Renney is delighted with the news.

"It is always an honor to be invited and have the opportunity to represent one's country and I am confident that these athletes will do us proud," said Renney upon hearing the news. "I am pleased for these athletes to have their abilities recognized at this level it is also a tribute to the entire program and the depth of talent we posses."

These six current athletes will join up to 35 other athletes, including some notable SFU alumni such as 2004 Olympians Erin Cumpstone and Auburn Sigurdson. In all, two teams will be ultimately named (a senior team and a developmental team), both scheduled to compete at the 2006 Canada Cup in Surrey, B.C. Post Canada Cup, the senior team will go on to compete at the 2006 World Championship which will be a 2008 Olympic Qualifier tournament.

Gill and Matthews are newcomers to the Clan, as Gill is a true freshman and Matthews a transfer from NCAA Division I Stetson University in Florida. Senior Schill was tops in a number of batting categories for the Clan in the spring of 2005, including batting averaging, hitting an impressive .500 (80for-160) on the season. Hartley led the Clan with four homeruns in 2005, while McLean batted .390 on the season. Gee also batted above .350, hitting .353 on the year.
