2021 NAIA Women's Wrestling National Invitational Recap - Day One

Jamestown, N.D. –  Campbellsville (Ky.) had a great first day on the mat, resting atop the team standings with 126.5 points at the conclusion of Friday’s action.  

This year’s invitational consists of 290 wrestlers hailing from 31 institutions in 15 different states. In second is Life (Ga.) with 100.5 points. Rounding out the top five is Oklahoma City with 78.5 points, Wayland Baptist (Texas) with 73 points, and Southern Oregon with 71.5 points.

Day 1 Highlights

  • All 10 top seeds advanced to the quarterfinals.
  • Three of the 10 weight classes had all top eight seeds advance to the quarterfinals.
  • The 136 and 191-pound weight classes each had two top-eight seeds lose in the first round, and a top-eight seed lost in the first round in the 101 and 123-pound weight class.
  • 101 and 123 also saw a top-eight seed lose in the round of 16.
  • Macie Stewart of Southern Oregon (109) and Victoria Hinojo (191) of Oklahoma City are the only two unseeded wrestlers to reach the semifinals.
  • Fifth-seeded Jordan Suarez of Wayland Baptist, and sixth-seeded Erin Redford of Eastern Oregon, made the semifinals at 143.
  • Eighth-seed Sienna Ramirez of Southern Oregon and fifth-seed Kendra Thompson of Campbellsville will face off in one of the 155-pound semifinals. Ramirez pinned top-seeded Cierra Foster of Oklahoma City in the quarterfinals.
  • Fifth-seed Sierra Talmadge of Jamestown advanced to the 170-pound semifinals with a 9-5 decision over Chamira Cooper of Cumberlands.
  • Hinojo won a 4-2 decision over third-seed MaQuoia Bernabe of Cumberlands in the quarterfinals.

Up Next

The final day of the NAIA Women’s Wrestling Invitational is set for Saturday, starting with the championship semifinals at 10 a.m.

Placement round matches (3rd, 5th, and 7th) will finish Saturday’s first session, with the Invitational finals starting at 7 p.m.
