MOBILE, Ala. – [ BRACKET | SCHEDULE ] Of the eight contests in the First Round of the NAIA Women's Tennis National Championships, only one team could pull off an upset - 17th seeded Reinhardt (Ga.) versus 16th seeded San Diego Christian (Calif.) - which finalized the nation's last remaining 16 squads, set to face off in the Second Round on Wednesday (May 19) morning at the Mobile Tennis Center. The top eight seeds in the national tournament earned a bye to the Second Round.

 

GAME NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS

MATCH 1 | #18 Reinhardt (Ga.) def. #15 San Diego Christian (Calif.), 4-1

• Reinhardt used twin 6-3 victories at two and three to nab the doubles point from higher-ranked San Diego Christian.

• Elise Standings clinched the contest for the Eagles after a comeback victory. After falling 6-4 in the first set, Standing used a 10-5 tiebreak in the second set and rolled to a 6-1 third-set win.

• Tomi Felix registered SDCC's lone point of the contest with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Tayler Nelson.

 

MATCH 2 | #9 William Carey (Miss.) (10-3) def. Midland (Neb.) (15-7), 4-0

• William Carey's Iskandar Karimov won both contests he appeared in with a 6-2 win with partner Danill Kilmov at the top flight before a 6-3, 6-3 win at the third spot over Luca Struffi.

• Leo Bresson (6-0, 6-3) and Eric Caleguer (6-0, 6-4) both earned a first-set sweep at the one and five singles spots, respectively.

• Caleguer's victory over Midland's Salvador Almeida clinched the contest for the Crusaders.

 

MATCH 3 | #12 Middle Georgia State def. IU East (Ind.), 4-0

• Middle Georgia State clinched the doubles point when Alexia Desmet and Franziska Nobis (MGSU) defeated Eva Caballero and Amonette Theron by a 6-2 final at the two spot.

• Nobis clinched the match for MGSU with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the fifth slot.

• Rebeca Lopez (MGSU) swept past IU East's Ashlyn Hubbard at the sixth flight, the match's lone sweep.

 

MATCH 4 | #13 Tennessee Wesleyan (12-6) def. #20 Campbellsville (Ky.) (16-5), 4-1

• Campbellsville took the second and third doubles flights and carried a 1-0 lead into singles play, but Wesleyan won flights 3-6 in singles play, including a pair of third-set tiebreaks.

• To clinch the match, Raquel Candas (1-6, 6-3, 6-2) and Linda Dimitroff (2-6, 6-3, 6-0) pulled out lopsided third-set wins to propel the Bulldogs into the Second Round.

• Campbellsville was the only team in the First Round to capture the doubles point but failed to win the match.

 

MATCH 5 | #14 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) (16-2) def. #23 Saint Katherine (Calif.) (8-4), 4-0

• Lindsey Wilson's Parisa Rachdanone and Salome Sposetti saved the doubles point for the Blue Raiders, posting a 7-6 win at the third spot after the teams split the first two flights.

• Rachdanone (6-3, 6-0) and Sposetti (6-1, 6-1) each returned to the win column in singles action at the fourth and fifth flights, respectively.

• Yuno Oe's 6-4, 6-2 final over USK's Ella Marshall clinched the match at the six spot.

 

MATCH 6 | #10 Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) (12-5) def. Mobile (Ala.) (6-7), 4-0

• Klara Smolikova and Chelsea Kelly teamed up for Cardinal Stritch to clinch doubles by a 6-3 final over Mobile's Melody Holcomb and Paula John at the bottom spot.

• Lisa Keller also clinched the match for the Wolves at two singles, posting a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Sojija Hrovat.

• Assya Trimari (6-2, 6-2) and Kimberly Tait (6-3, 6-1) captured fairly easy decisions at four and five singles, respectively.

 

MATCH 7 | #11 William Woods (Mo.) def. Southwestern (Kan.), 5-0

• William Woods' Zlata Shuraeva and Ana Zavala battled to a 7-5 victory over Samantha Loving and Catherine Coe to clinch the doubles point at the top spot.

• The Moundbuilders took the second doubles flight, 6-4, leaving the top spot to determine the doubles point.

• Rukshika Wijesooriya continued the Owls' momentum, taking out Alexa Powers by a 6-1, 6-0 final at the four spot.

• Shuraeva and Zavala made easy work at the top two spots, respectively, posting 6-2, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-1 victories.

 

MATCH 8 | #16 Cumberlands (Ky.) (20-3) def. #21 Indiana Tech (17-3), 5-2

• Laura Marie and Tessa Gray ran away with a 6-2 win over Tech's Abigail Simms/Ana Gomez to clinch the doubles point at the third spot.

• Cumberland captured three of its four singles points in third sets, including Tomomi Nagao's 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 win at the top flight.

• Marie finished a strong day with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win at the third flight over Marianna Murcia.
