Benedictine (Kan.) Caps Off the Perfect Season with its Second Red Banner
SAVANNAH, Ga. - [Bracket | Box Scores | Photos] The 2025 NAIA Women's Lacrosse National Championship reached its peak on the afternoon of Saturday, May 3, in Savannah, Georgia, at Memorial Stadium in Chatham County with the Benedictine College (Kan.) Ravens completing an undefeated season (21-0) for the second red banner in program history. The championship game against the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) Patriots (17-4) was back and forth for most of the game, but the offensive power of several BC players allowed the Ravens to prevail late in the game to put a cap on the perfect season.
The Ravens open the scoring early on championship Saturday from Memorial Stadium as Kaylen Moore connected with Kiera Russell for the opening goal of the game, just a mere 72-seconds after the opening draw, but the BC lead was short lived in the early going as the Patriots earned a free-position shot from Ashlee Baker who buried the opportunity to tie the game back up at 1-1. UC goalkeepr Mia Bosah came up with a big free-position save to keep the game tied, which allowed the Patriots to run the field as Marisa Heisten connected with Anna Lobbezoo to take a 2-1 lead. Moore was all over the field in the opening quarter, scoring a goal to tie the game with 7:30 left on the clock, then she tied the national record for most assists in a season when she found Lile Chekas to give the Ravens a 3-2 advantage with 6:19 to play.
After a timeout from Benedictine with 3:49 to go in the opening quarter, Bosah was once again called upon for a point-blank save to keep it a one-goal game, but on the next trip down the field, Chanterra Allen found the back of the net to give the Ravens a two-goal lead. Molly Owen was only needed once in the opening quarter, and she was up for the task as BC led 4-2 after 15 minutes of play. The Ravens flexed their offensive power in the opening quarter as they led the Patriots in shots, 12-4, while going a perfect 7-for-7 on clears compared to UC's 4-for-7.
BC quickly extended its lead in the second quarter, putting away the fifth goal of the game from the stick of Allen. Owen made a point-blank save of her own in the second quarter to keep the Ravens ahead 5-2, but much like Cumberlands, Benedictine can also run the field and turn defense into offense as Kiera Russell scored the sixth goal for the Ravens to lead by four with just over 10-minutes to go in the opening half. BC continued to push offensively as Allen slid a shot past the Patriots, for a five-goal game and forced a Cumberlands timeout with 9:21 to play in the half.
Aleyah Belton cut the deficit to four on a stinger of a shot, but the four-goal margin was short-lived as the Ravens won the next draw control as Lorelei Siegel laid down a laser of a shot into the bottom corner of the net to push the game back to a five-goal lead with 8:08 to play in the second quarter. The back and forth continued from both ends of the field as the second quarter drew to a close. With 68 seconds to play before the halftime whistle, the Patriots cut the margin to four goals from Marisa Helsten, then to a three-goal deficit Rittman and Lobbezoo connected to trail 10-7 at the break. Heading into halftime, BC led in shots (20-12) and ground balls (12-6), while keeping turnovers to a minimum at eight.
Cumberlands came out in the third quarter, scoring two goals back to back from Tess Lisly at the 9:27 mark, the Belton at the 7:21 mark off a free-position shot. The Ravens answered right back, scoring two goals of their own just 30 seconds apart from Moore and Siegel to lead 12-10. BC added its 13th goal of the day with just under four minutes to play in the third quarter from Moore for her third of the day.
The Patriots ended the final 7:30 on a 3-0 run with goals from Belton, Tess Lisy, and Baker to trail the Ravens by one, 13-12, as the final 15 minutes of play to crown a 2025 NAIA Women's Lacrosse National Champion were just around the corner.
Benedictine once again began the final quarter of the championship with Moore and Russell finding each other just 21 seconds after the draw to push the lead back three. The Ravens and Patriots continued to trade goals in the final quarter, as it was a two-goal lead for BC with 11 minutes to play in regulation. Benedictine had back-to-back free-position shots with 10:14 to play and then 8:54 to play, and were able to convert on both out of the sticks of Allen and Siegel for an 18-14 lead and forcing a timeout from Cumberlands. In the final seven minutes of the game, the Ravens scored two more goals from Russell and Allen as the temperature cooled off and a light rain began to fall.
Benedictine was dominant across the stats in the championship game. The Ravens outshot the Patriots 46-28 and doubled ground balls 20-10. Anna Lobbezo for UC had a stellar performance, scoring six goals on eight shots with two ground balls and four draw controls. Cumberlands' goalkeeper Bosah played the full 60 minutes, making 11 saves. For the Ravens, Allen was red hot in the title game, scoring eight goals on 14 shots; Russell and the 2025 tournament MVP Moore both recorded four goals, while Siegel notched three.
