The Patriots Head to the Women's Lacrosse Championship Game after Defeating the Seahawks in a One Goal Thriller
SAVANNAH, Ga. - In the first of two semifinal games at the 2025 NAIA Women's Lacrosse National Championship, the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) (17-3) escapes with a big outing from goalkeeper Mia Bosah to take down top-seeded Keiser University (Fla.) (16-2) with a final score of 15-14. The Patriots' opponent will be the winner of second-seeded Benedictine (Kan.) and third-seeded SCAD Savannah (Ga.) on Saturday, May 3 at 1 p.m. ET.
The game commenced with KU taking an early lead, thanks to an unassisted goal by Peyton Tomlinson. UC quickly responded with goals from Anna Lobbezoo and Morgan Tate, establishing a competitive rhythm that would persist throughout the match—the first quarter ended with Keiser leading 3-2.
In the second quarter, the teams continued to battle on both ends of the field. Keiser extended their lead to 6-4 with contributions from MacKenzie Gibaud and Jia Schweigert. However, Cumberlands rallied back with a series of goals, including a crucial free-position shot by Ashlee Baker, tying the game at 6-6. A last-minute goal by Morgan Tate gave Cumberlands a slender 7-6 advantage going into halftime.
The third quarter saw UC extending its lead with four goals, including two from standout player Emma Rittman. KU fought back, with Jia Schweigert and Isabelle Vrensen keeping them within reach, but still trailing 11-9.
The final quarter was a thriller, with the Seahawks' Jia Schweigert scoring twice to help her team take a 14-12 lead with just over five minutes remaining. However, the Patriots' continued to battle through as Emma Rittman and Ashlee Baker delivered crucial goals to level the score at 14-14. With just over two minutes left in regulation, Koral Hadac scored the decisive goal, sealing 15-14 victory for Cumberlands as they punched a ticket to the title game for just the second time since women's lacrosse became a championship sport in the NAIA in 2021.
Emma Rittman was a standout for UC, scoring six goals and playing a pivotal role in her team's victory. Ashlee Baker also made significant contributions, with three goals and four assists. On the defensive front, the Patriots' goalkeeper, Mia Bosah, made 20 massive saves. For Keiser, Jia Schweigert was a key performer, scoring five goals and providing one assist. Isabelle Vrensen and Samantha Esher also added two goals each to Keiser's tally.
Cumberlands was efficient with their opportunities, converting 15 of their 25 shots. In contrast, Keiser took a staggering 48 shots but managed to score only 14 times, highlighting the effectiveness of Cumberlands' defense and goalkeeping. KU dominated in ground balls (26-12) and draw controls (16-15), reflecting their aggressive play style. The match witnessed numerous penalties, with both teams receiving multiple yellow and green cards, which added to the intensity of the contest.
