2021 NAIA Women’s Lacrosse Championship Preview

SAVANNAH, Ga. – [SCHEDULE | BRACKET] The 2021 NAIA Women's Lacrosse Championship will open up play with four quarterfinals games on Wednesday, May 5, at Memorial Stadium.

Quick Facts:

  • This is the first year that NAIA Women's Lacrosse is a championship event and the first year its been held at Memorial Stadium in Savannah, Ga.
  • There are eight teams that advanced to the championship.  The field is comprised of four automatic qualifiers and four at-large berths.
  • The automatic berths are determined based on either on regular-season or conference tournament title winners or by conference selection.  The remaining at-large bids were determined by the final regular-season Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Top 10 Poll.
  • Keiser (Fla.) – The Seahawks are the top-seed in the tournament and lone undefeated team in the field.  Keiser posted a perfect 13-0 record en route to capturing the Mid-South Conference south division regular season and MSC tournament titles. The team is ranked in the NAIA goals allowed per game (5.15).
  • Cumberlands (Ky.) – The Patriots won the MSC north division title en route to a 14-1 record.  UC leads the NAIA in save percentage (.639) while ranking second in goals (279), assists (185), and points (430).  The team's lone loss came to top-seed Keiser in the MSC championship game.
  • Reinhardt (Ga.) – The Eagles captured their second straight AAC regular season and tournament title with an 11-1 record.  Reinhardt is on an 11-game win streak and leads the NAIA in goals per game (21.92).  The Eagles are also second in the country in assists per game (11.75) while ranking third in total points with 404.
  • Benedictine (Kan.) – The Ravens captured their fourth straight KCAC title this season after posting a 13-1 record.  Benedictine leads the NAIA in goals (296), assists (185), and points (481) on the year while holding their opponents to an NAIA best 3.07 goals per game.
  • Lawrence Tech (Mich.) – The Blue Devils captured the WHAC tournament title to earn an automatic berth in the tournament.  Lawrence Tech went 7-3 on the year including defeating Siena Heights 17-10 in the WHAC championship game.  The Blue Devils are ranked fifth in the country averaging 8.6 assists per game.
  • Life (Ga.) – The Running Eagles climbed three spots over the season to be ranked No. 6 in the final poll.  Life leads the NAIA in caused turnovers (234) and ground balls (398) while scooping the second most draw controls (232) in the NAIA.
  • SCAD-Savannah (Ga.) – The Bees opened the season as the No. 1 ranking.  SCAD has posted an 8-2 record on the season and is ranked third in the NAIA in assists per game (10.40).  The Bees are also ranked third in the country with a .503 save percentage.
  • Siena Heights (Mich.) – The Saints worked their way from receiving votes to capture the eighth spot in the tournament.  Siena Heights avenged its early-season loss to Concordia with a 16-11 in the conference semifinals. 

Players to watch

  • Madalyn Huber of Keiser – The Mid-South Conference player of the year, has totaled 63 draw controls, 33 ground balls, and 23 caused turnovers on the year.
  • Sophia Milia of SCAD Savannah – leads the country in assists per game at 4.60.  The junior has tallied 46 assists in the Bees 10 games.
  • Leanne Windon of Life – is the NAIA top producer of caused turnovers at 65 on the year.  The freshman is averaging 4.06 caused turnovers per game in 16 games.
  • Natalie Wechter of Benedictine – leads the NAIA in draw controls with 9.43 per game.  The KCAC Offensive Player of the Year has notched 132 draw controls over the Ravens 14 games.
  • Bella Ricchiazzi of Cumberlands – leads the nation in goals (67) and points (100) as she is the only player in the NAIA to tally 100 points on the season.
  • Gianna Stalletti of Benedictine – leads the NAIA in goals-against average at 1.92.  She has made 28 saves in the Ravens 12 games.
  • Olivia McCarrell of Cumberlands – is ranked top in the country in save percentage at .641.  The freshman has tallied 123 saves in 15 games and has held opponents to 4.60 GAA.

The quarterfinals begin the single elimination bracket play with the winners advance to the semifinals and then the championship.  The championship is slated for Saturday, May 8, at 2 p.m. ET
