2021 NAIA Women's Lacrosse Championship - Quarterfinals

SAVANNAH, Ga. – [Schedule/Results] [Bracket] A pair of upsets highlighted the quarterfinals of the 2021 NAIA Women’s Lacrosse National Championships Wednesday at Memorial Stadium.  No. 5 Lawrence Tech (Mich.) knocked off No. 4 Benedictine (Kan.) 20-11, while No. 6 Life (Ga.) took down No. 3 Reinhardt (Ga.) 15-14.  In addition to that the top two seeds advanced as No. 1 Keiser (Fla.) posted a 12-7 win over No. 8 Siena Heights, while No. 2 Cumberlands took down No. 7 SCAD Savannah 18-7. 

Game Notes/Highlights

No. 1 Keiser (Fla.) def. No. 8 Siena Heights (Mich.) 12-7

  • Siena Heights came out strong with a pair of goals in the first nine minutes to take a 2-0 lead. 
  • Madison Andrews netted a game-high five goals including all three of Seahawks first-half goals.
  • Keiser outscored the Siena Heights 9-3 in the second half to rally from behind to advance.
  • Alexis Nicole added her second goal before Marissa Cirino notched a man-up goal with 12:07 remaining to give the Saints a 4-2 lead in the first half.  Nicole completed her hat trick with a goal at the 26:47 mark of the second half.
  • The Seahawks tallied seven unanswered goals, over a 12-minute span, to take a 10-5 lead with 12:32 remaining.  That run featured six different goal scorers, including a pair of goals from Andrews. 
  • The two teams each added a pair of goals in the final ten minutes for the 12-7 final.
  • Elizabeth Elliott made 10 saves in the cage for Siena Heights, while Madison Spell scooped a game-high 10 draw controls.
  • For Keiser, Jessica Covell made 10 saves as Madalyn Huber tallied three ground balls and three draw controls.

No. 5 Lawrence Tech (Mich.) def. No. 4 Benedictine (Kan.) 20-11

  • Lawrence Tech got off to a strong start netting six unanswered goals to open the first half, three of which were scored by Ashley Sherry.
  • Molley Muehlebach netted two of the next three goals as Benedictine cut the deficit to 6-3. 
  • The Blue Devils added a four-goal run along with a two-goal run, that included a pair of goals from Abbey Smentowski to take a 12-6 lead into the break.
  • Four different Blue Devils connected with the cage to open the second half to extend their lead to 16-6 with 22:58 remaining. 
  • Benedictine tried to rally with a three-goal run, however, Lawrence Tech responded with a three-goal run of their own.
  • Smentowski led all scorers with six goals, while Sherry added five goals and an assist.  Dorie Coggin added a game-high 12 saves to earn the win for the Blue Devils.
  • Muehlebach notched a hat trick as Rianna England and Aidan McEnerney both added a pair of goals for Benedictine.  Natalie Wechter grabbed 11 draw controls in the game, while Gianna Stalletti tallied three caused turnovers.

No. 6 Life (Ga.) def. No. 3 Reinhardt (Ga.) 15-14

  • In a game that saw five lead changes and seven ties it was Lacy Legaspi netting the game-winning goal with 3:12 remaining as No. 6 Life knocked off No. Reinhardt 15-14.
  • The Running Eagles netted the first three goals of the game, including a Kelly Beshaw goal at the 28:56 mark to jump out to an early lead.
  • Reinhardt responded with a four-goal run of their own to take their first lead of the game midway through the first half. 
  • Life retook the lead as Legaspi netted a pair of goals as part of a 3-1 run, which put them back in front with 9:24 remaining.  Morgan McGhee added a goal for the Eagles to send the game into the break tied at 6-6.   
  • The Eagles opened the second half on a 6-3 run to take a 12-9 lead with 17:07 left in the second half. 
  • Life responded with a 5-1 run of their own, spanning 12 minutes to take a 14-13 lead.  Amaya Garner netted the equalizer for Reinhardt before Annaliese Froese connected with Legaspi for the eventual game-winning goal.
  • Legaspi led Life with five goals, with Tina Ricci tallied a pair of goals to go along with four assists and seven ground balls.  Maria Arvizu scooped six draw controls and four ground balls in the win.
  • Reinhardt was led by Morgan McGhee and Caroline Copenhaver who tallied five and four goals, respectfully.  McGhee added 14 draw controls, while Jessie Landers recorded nine saves. 

 

No. 2 Cumberlands (Ky.) def. No. 7 SCAD Savannah (Ga.) 18-7

  • Cumberlands came out strong netting 10 consecutive goals to open the game with three of those goals coming from Bella Ricchiazzi. 
  • SCAD closed out the first half recording two of the next three goals to make it 11-2 in favor of the Patriots at the break. 
  • The two teams traded goals twice before Reegan Hensley and Ricchiazzi connected for goals to extend the lead to 15-4 with 19:02 remaining. 
  • Clarke Haas notched a man-up goal to spark a 3-1 Bees run, however, it wasn’t enough as Cumberlands tallied the final two goals of the game for the 17-8 final.
  • Ricchiazzi led the way for the Patriots with eight goals and ten points, while Emily Heim finished with five points and five draw controls.  Olivia McCarrell made 17 stops in the cage in the win.
  • Tatum Crouch and Haas led SCAD with two goals apiece, while two other Bees notched a pair of points in the game.  Sydney Bowers scooped four ground balls and forced two turnovers as Tracy Richards made six saves.
