Ottawa Claims Fifth-Consecutive Banner in Flag Football Finals

Full Schedule & Results

RIVERSIDE, Mo. – Ottawa (Kan.) never trailed in Thursday’s Women’s Flag Football Championship Bracket Final, claiming its fifth-consecutive Red Banner with a 34-20 win over Keiser (Fla.) – and the win in the final game was arguably the least dramatic of all three OU wins in the bracket.

Madysen Carrera scored four touchdowns for the Braves in the title game, throwing for three and adding a score on the ground, and she completed 33-of-40 passes for 218 yards. Keiser's Haylie Young also completed 33 passes, on 48 attempts, throwing for three Seahawk touchdowns.

Ottawa and Keiser matched 10-play, 66-yard drives to start the game, but the Braves converted an extra point to lead 7-6 after a quarter, and a similar second quarter played out, as Ottawa scored on Carrera’s second touchdown of the game – her only rushing score – to go in front 13-6. Keiser answered when Young found Chloe Griffin in the end zone from eight yards out, cutting the OU lead to 13-12 at halftime.

The Braves broke the game open in the third quarter with two scores, and Carrera put the game away in the fourth quarter with a four-yard touchdown pass to Addison Orsborn to seal a two-score win.

Ottawa got its first scare of the bracket from KCAC rival Kansas Wesleyan, as the Coyotes led 7-0 in the first quarter of the first bracket game. Ottawa did take a 13-7 lead to halftime, but KWU found the end zone in the fourth quarter, and despite matching OU touchdown-for-touchdown in overtime, the Coyotes failed on a pair of PATs, while Carrera threw a six-yard touchdown pass and converted to win 26-25, advancing to the semifinals.

In the semifinals, the Braves fell behind 7-0 to Thomas (Ga.) and didn’t score until the fourth quarter, forcing overtime, where OU got a stop after trading touchdowns. Carrera sent the Braves to their fifth-straight final, hitting Alyssa Linkous for an overtime TD to win 19-13.

Keiser reached the championship game by beating St. Thomas (Fla.) 20-19 in the quarterfinals and Baker (Kan.) 34-13 in the semifinal round.

In the playoff bracket, made up of teams who did not advance to the championship bracket after pool play, Milligan (Tenn.) took the final from William Woods (Mo.), 28-12.
