• The hosts went 8-1 today to cap off action on Day 1 in the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Rounds. The only loss occurred when top seeded Concordia (Calif.) tripped up at home to No. 4 seed Madonna (Mich.) by a 4-3 count. Overall, the hosts out-scored their opponents by a 59-12 advantage. Three of the hosts’ wins were in five innings.
• No. 4 Rio Grande (Ohio) and No. 4 Madonna both were victorious over No. 1 seeds today. Rio Grande got past top seed Campbellsville (Ky.) by notching three runs in the top of the seventh to win 4-3 in the USC Beaufort (S.C.) Bracket. The Crusaders defeated No. 1-seed Concordia at home, 4-3.
• Prior to today, the No. 1 seeds were a perfect 20-0 on Day One during the Opening Rounds.
• Defending national champion Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) opened play as the No. 1 seed in their own bracket and defeated No. 4 seed Tennessee Wesleyan, 3-0. The Warhawks are now a perfect 6-0 all-time in Opening Rounds.
• Weather impacted two Opening Round tournaments today, which included the Oregon Tech and William Carey (Miss.) Brackets. No games were played in Hattiesburg, Miss., so four contests are scheduled for Tuesday. In Klamath Falls, Ore., weather pushed back Game 2 for Tuesday play. In addition, the St. Gregory’s Bracket (Okla.) is scheduled to play five games on Day 2 tomorrow.
• Since the start of Opening Rounds in 2013, the hosts have now gone a combined 57-23.
• In the previous two years, the top seed has been the Opening Round champion in 15-of-20 events. The No. 2 seed has won four Opening Rounds, while No. 3 College of Idaho is the only No. 3 seed to win the event (2014). There has not been a No. 4 seed to win the Opening Round.
• The 10 Opening Round champions will meet up at the NAIA Softball World Series in Sioux City, Iowa for a seven day, double-elimination event starting on May 22. There are four games during each of the first three days (Sunday is an off day); three games on May 26; two games on May 27; World Series championship final on May 28 (if necessary game to follow).
• The 10-team World Series bracket will be officially announced May 13 after the Opening Rounds have been completed (late in the day).
