Madonna's Crampton Tosses Perfect Game

Madonna's Crampton Tosses Perfect Game
Story by Patrick Moore, Madonna Sports Information

TITUSVILLE, Fla. – Junior right hander Bree Crampton etched her name into the Madonna (Mich.) softball record book on Tuesday (March 4), becoming just the third pitcher in MU history to record a perfect game as she threw a 9-0 shutout over Concordia Chicago at Chain of Lakes Park.

Crampton (5-1) struck out 13 batters and did not allow a ball out of the infield, picking up a pair of ground outs in the five inning run ruled affair. She is the first Madonna pitcher since All-American Jess Irwin (2008-11) in 2009 to throw a perfect game. Crampton’s 13 strikeouts are just one away from matching her career-high. The game is also the first no hitter of her career.

Senior Caitlyn Keuvelaar and freshman Myklan Kish  both went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in three runs each. Freshman Morgan Kaiser also recorded a pair of hits and drove in a run for the Crusaders.

MU scored all nine of its runs in the third inning with two outs. Junior center fielder Kasey Trierweiler  led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore second baseman Emma Cook. Keuvelaar followed with an infield single to put two on. Senior catcher Kristen Drabek  reached two batters later on an error to load the bases. Kish then cleared the bases with a double to left to give MU a 3-0 lead.

After stealing third, Kish came home on a single to center by Kaiser for a 4-0 lead. After a walk to freshman shortstop Nicole Salloum put two runners on, fellow rookie Kayla Rebain singled in Kaiser for a 5-0 cushion. Back-to-back walks to Trierweiler and Cook forced in another run before Keuvelaar’s double cleared the bases and gave the Royal Blue and Gold a 9-0 lead.

The nine-run cushion was more than enough for Crampton as she struck out seven of the final nine batters of the game.

Alicia Salata (0-1) suffered the loss for Concordia, giving up eight runs, all unearned in her 2.2 innings of work.

Madonna takes on Shawnee State and Concordia Chicagao in a split doubleheader on Wednesday (March 5).
