Pool G Recap: Day Three (Saturday)

Pool G Recap: Day Three (Saturday)

GULF SHORES, Ala. - Shorter (Ga.) defeated defending NAIA National Champion Oregon Tech 5-1 on the final day of pool play action to win Pool G, while Madonna (Mich.) beat St. Gregory's (Okla.) 6-3 in eight innings to cap the pool's action. Shorter will face Pool B's winner Monday, May 21 at 10 a.m. CDT to open play in the double elimination bracket.

The Lady Hawks plated five runs in the bottom of the first inning against the Hustlin' Owls and never looked back. Maddie Bray picked up the win in the circle by going the distance and limiting Oregon Tech to one unearned run on three hits, while fanning five.

At the dish, eight different Lady Hawks recorded a hit and four different players drove in a run. Bray also went 1-for-3 with one RBI at the dish to back her effort in the circle.

Shorter batted around in that first inning, scoring five runs on five hits and two errors. A one-out walk to Jackie Castaneda started the rally and Amanda Dailey immediately followed with a RBI-double to open the scoring. Several batters later, after a two-out error extended the inning, Bray, Whitney Hood and Kellee Stone went back-to-back-to-back with run-scoring hits.

In Madonna's win, the Crusaders used a three-run eighth to pick up the win, while Hallie Minch gave the team 8 innings of strong work from the circle. She struck out six and limited St. Gregory's to two earned runs. At the plate, Amber Rafko and Arielle Cox each produced two hits and two RBI for Madonna, while St. Gregory's got three hits from Hay Lea Harper.

All of the eighth inning scoring came with two outs. Kasey Trierweiler and Carlee Meek reached on singles, Cox stroked a two-run triple to right, before touching home herself following a Kristen Drabek base knock.
