Pool B Recap: Day Two (Friday)

GULF SHORES, Ala. - (CSUSM vs. UM Box Score) (SNU vs. TWU Box Score) Cal State San Marcos scored a come-from-behind extra-inning win over Mobile (Ala.) and Southern Nazarene (Okla.) exploded for 13 runs against Texas Wesleyan in Pool B action Saturday at the NAIA Softball National Championship. The event is being held at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex for the second-straight year.

Trailing 2-0 after three innings, Cal State San Marcos notched five runs in the top of the fourth. Alyssa Dronenburg smacked her second home run in as many days at the national tournament to lead off that scoring spree. A pair of RBI singles by Caitlin Monnahan and Brittany Grier put the Cougars on top by a 3-2 score. A big Mobile miscue later in the inning allowed two more Cougar runners to score.

Mobile came back to tie up the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth. Hannah Beth Baker singled home the tying run. However, the Cougars answered with a pair of runs with two outs in the top of the eighth. Alex Miller came through in the clutch with a 2-RBI single for the winning runs.

Cortney Allen was credited with the win in the circle to move to 22-4 on the year. She pitched the final six innings as she struck out eight and allowed two earned runs on three hits.

Mobile's Brittany Dunson led the Rams with two hits, while Jessica Palmer recorded three RBI.

Southern Nazarene prevailed, 13-7, over Texas Wesleyan courtesy of 19 base hits. The Red Storm was riding along smoothly into a potential run-ruled victory before the Rams posted seven runs in the final two innings.

The Red Storm plated three in the first frame and two more in the third to ease into the win. Kylie Lang mashed a two-run homer in the first and Aubrey Jones rapped a two-run double in the third for the big hits. After a single Southern Nazarene run in the fifth, Texas Wesleyan put up five in the sixth inning. Ashleigh Jiminez and Morgan Johnson each had two-RBI singles during the inning.

Two more Ram runs in the seventh were not enough for Texas Wesleyan. Maci-Brooke Lambert posted the victory as she went 5.0 innings and allowed just one hit and struck out five.

Kristina Forest and Jones each tallied four hits and three RBI each. Amy Madden finished with 4 RBI. Jiminez and Orebaugh led the Rams with two hits each.

In Pool B on Saturday, Texas Wesleyan takes on Mobile at 12:30 p.m. CDT and Cal State San Marcos is scheduled to face Southern Nazarene at 5:30 p.m. in the Pool B championship game.
