Pool C Recap: Day Two (Friday)

Pool C Recap: Day Two (Friday)

GULF SHORES, Ala. - (OCU vs. WIU Box Score) (WBC vs. TU Box Score) Oklahoma City pitcher Lily LaVelle set a pair of NAIA national records and Williams Baptist (Ark.) shutout Thomas (Ga.) in Pool C action today at the NAIA Softball National Championship. The event is being held at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex for the second-straight year.

Oklahoma City got seven brilliant innings from LaVelle in the 6-1 victory over Webber International (Fla.). The Star bats turned in a four-run fifth inning to make LaVelle a winner. LaVelle held Webber International to one unearned run on four hits in 7 innings. She struck out eleven and walked three. Her strikeouts increased her season total to 477, surpassing the 473 done by Sharon Bell of St. Gregory's (Okla.) in 2007, which was the old national record. The game marked her 162nd appearance, which topped the old national appearances record of 161 set by Candice Thomas of California Baptist from 2004-07.

With the score tied 1-1 after four innings, the Stars' bats came through in the fifth. LaVelle started the rally with a leadoff walk, and she later scored the game-winner on a wild pitch. The big blow in the inning came in the form of a Jamie Rateliff three-run double.

Rateliff finished with three RBI, while LeeAnn Lopez and Magean De La Torre had multi-hit games. Webber International had four hitters each post a hit.

In its first national appearance, Williams Baptist moved to 2-0 with a 3-0 win over Thomas. Karisa Hendrix fanned nine Night Hawk batters in the complete-game victory. She gave up a mere single to left in the fourth inning and bunt-single in the sixth.

With no score after two innings, the Eagles plated three runs in the third. Felicia Woodard, who led off with a single, scored on a sac bunt by Hallie Horton. Laura Tucker later added an RBI, followed by a RBI double off the bat of Chelsea Sanders.

In Pool C on Saturday, Webber International and Thomas will play at Noon CDT and Oklahoma City will face Williams Baptist at 5 p.m.
