Freshman Sets Single-Season Hits Record at SNU

Freshman Sets Single-Season Hits Record at SNU
Story by Southern Nazarene Sports Information

SHAWNEE, Okla. - She hasn't even completed her first year for Southern Nazarene (Okla.), but Jill Clemence already has a school record in the back pocket. The freshman set the school record for hits in a single-season after three hit in a doubleheader split with Saint Gregory's (Okla.).

Clemence recorded one hit in a 4-3 win for the 15th-ranked Crimson Storm (38-15, 17-6 SAC) and notched two more hits in a 4-2 loss and that put her at 83 hits on the season. She moves past Katie Hale's mark of 82 hits in the 2009 season. The split also leaves SNU in third place and four games ahead of 17th-ranked Saint Gregory's.

The Crimson Storm got on the board first in the opener in the second inning when Kacey Acker hit her fourth home run of the year with an opposite field shot to left to put SNU up 2-0. SNU added another when Katie Turner drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk to make it 3-0.

The Storm then took a 4-0 lead in the fourth on a bases-loaded wild pitch, but Saint Gregory's cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs. The Lady Cavs added another in the top of the sixth to get within one at 4-3, but Jeneva Nelson slammed the door shut with her second save of the year. The sophomore gave up just one hit and struck out three in one and two-thirds innings of relief.

Kaci Crawford (18-7) picked up the win after giving up three runs on eight hits and struck four in five and one-thirds innings of work.

Acker finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Kylie Lang was also 2-for-3 while Clemence went 1-for-2 with a run scored and two walks.

In the nightcap, the Cavaliers took the first lead with a two-run home run in the second. SGU made it a 3-0 game in the fourth with Tara Nall hit her second straight home run. The Crimson Storm got back into the game when Amy Madden belted her 14th home of the year with a two-run bomb to left to cut it to 3-2.

The Lady Cavs answered in the top of the fifth with another run to make it 4-2 and got behind Allison Conyers from there. Conyers notched the win after she gave up just two hits and struck out five in three and two-thirds innings of work.

Maci-Brooke Lambert (12-6) took the loss after giving up four runs on seven hits in five innings of work. Clemence went 2-for-4 in the nightcap while Madden went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored.

The Crimson Storm will now enter the SAC Tournament as the third seed and will play Science & Arts of Oklahoma, Friday, in the first round. SNU will then either play Lubbock Christian or Rogers State in the second round. Times should be released sometime Wednesday.
