Softball Players of the Week - No. 6

By Chad Waller, NAIA Director of Communications & Sports Information

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Charlsie Broome of Shorter (Ga.) has been tabbed as the NAIA National Softball Player of the Week and Hollind Englert of Bethany (Kan.) has been named the NAIA National Softball Pitcher of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Broome and Englert were chosen based on their performances from April 9 - 15 out of a pool of conference player of the week selections among 24 conference/independent/unaffiliated groupings.

Broome, a 5-foot-6 senior centerfielder from LaFayette, Ga., went 9-for-14 (.643) to help No. 10 Shorter sweep Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) foes Emmanuel (Ga.) and Southern Wesleyan (S.C.). She rapped three homers, two doubles and a triple in four games. She also tallied eight RBIs, scored eight times and had a 1.571 slugging percentage.

On April 13 in the doubleheader wins over Emmanuel, she went 4-for-7 with a double in each game and a triple in the opener. She wrapped up the week with five hits in Shorter's sweep of Southern Wesleyan on April 14. During that two-game set, she tied teammate Jackie Castaneda for the SSAC lead with three homers on the day. She currently stands with 11 home runs on the year.

Broome is hitting a career-high .416 and ranked in the top 20 nationally in total hits (64), runs scored (49) and total bases (109).

Englert, a 5-foot-4 sophomore from Castle Rock, Colo., notched two wins in the circle last week. She amassed a complete-game, 3-2 victory against Kansas Wesleyan on April 11. She allowed four hits and struck out one batter. Her highlight came on April 14 in the 1-0 shutout of Sterling (Kan.). She tossed a perfect game in seven innings of work. She fanned five batters in the process.

On the year, Englert is 12-2 with a 2.50 ERA in 89.2 innings of action.
