Russell Earns 400th Win in Lady Flames Sweep

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Coach Emily Russell has reached the latest milestone in her coaching career at Lee (Tenn.), claiming her 400th win with a doubleheader sweep over Truett-McConnell (Ga.) Tuesday at Butler Field. The Lee ladies cruised to wins of 11-0 and 10-0 to move to 37-7 on the year.

"I have been blessed with some great players over the years," said the Lee skipper, now in her 10th season. "Really, I've just been able to watch lots of good players win these games for us."

"Reaching a milestone like this really makes you look back on all the seasons I've had and the players I've been able to coach. It's nice to take a break from the focus of the season sometimes to take a look back on that."

Russell's Lady Flames certainly seemed focused, Tuesday, using timely hitting and solid pitching to complete the doubleheader shutout. Combined in the two contests, Lee drilled 18 hits, led by three-hit performances by Savanna Bell, Charlie Wooden, and Laurel Allen.

Allen entered for a hobbled Dominique Hannah in game one and in her two at-bats drilled a two-run double and closed the run-rule shortened contest with a grand slam. The freshman outfielder totaled six runs batted in for the contest, adding a pair of RBI in the second game on a two-run triple.

Dezirae Parsons also added a pair of hits in the first contest, drilling a home run and scoring twice. Wooden and Tabitha Farrow each scored twice after registering one hit.

Brittany Balough started in the circle and worked five innings, allowing just two hits, while striking out five and walking three. The senior hurler moves to 19-2 on the season.

Truett-McConnell (6-27, 1-17) used three pitchers in the contest, with starter Jade Butler dropping to 2-6 after four innings of work. Butler allowed five runs on eight hits.

The Lady Flames jumped on top early in the second contest, taking advantage of two Truett-McConnell errors to tack on six runs, five of them unearned. Lee then added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull away in another shortened contest.

Katie Deems improved to 2-1 with the win, holding the visitors to a single hit in four innings. Caitlin Beshears came on to work a perfect fifth inning in her first work of the 2012 season.

Wooden was the only Lee player to turn in a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with one RBI and a run scored. Kelsey Barnes drilled a bases loaded-double, scoring twice to go with her three RBI.

The Lady Bears had a single hit from Caitlyn Hogg. Megan Fulcher (1-9) started and allowed six runs, one earned, on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.

The 12th-ranked Lee ladies now sit tied atop the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) standings at 14-3. They will play host once again this weekend, as Southern Wesleyan University visits, Friday at 3 p.m., with Emmanuel College joining for a Senior Day doubleheader, Saturday at 1 p.m.
