Players of the Week ? No. 1
By Jake Knabel, NAIA Communications & Sports Information Intern

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Brooke Thomas of Union (Tenn.) has been tabbed as the NAIA National Softball Pitcher of the Week and Jordan Reynolds of Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) has been named the NAIA National Softball Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Thomas and Reynolds are the first honorees of the 2012 season. The pair was chosen, based on their performances from March 5 – 11 out of a pool of conference player of the week selections among 24 conference/independent/unaffiliated groupings.

Thomas, a Huntingdon, Tenn., native, gave up just one earned run in her three starts over the last week. In 21 innings of work the 5-foot-5 junior allowed only 10 hits, two walks and struck out 25 batters while earning victories in all three outings. She recorded back-to-back wins over ranked opponents on consecutive days when she topped No. 21 Columbia (Mo.) on March 9 and then shut out No. 24 Saint Xavier (Ill.) on March 10. She went the complete seven innings and struck out nine in both contests.

Thomas ranks among the nation’s elite in several major categories, including fifth in strike outs (94), 14th in wins (8), 18th in innings pitched (69.1) and 23rd in opponents’ batting average (.156).

Reynolds, a Metamora, Ill., native, hit a scorching .617 (29-for-47) in a busy week in which she played shortstop in all 12 of the team’s games and led the Tigers to an 11-1 record. For the week, Reynolds also tallied one home run, 12 RBI, nine doubles, 21 runs and went 12-for-12 on stolen base attempts. The 5-foot-7 senior collected at least two hits in nine games, including a six-hit game against Viterbo (Wis.) on March 7 and a five-hit outburst versus Iowa Wesleyan on that same day, making her 11-for-11 on the day.

Reynolds ranks near the top nationally in a multitude of statistical categories, including second in triples (4), fourth in stolen bases (16), 14th in batting average (.547) and 19th in runs scored (24).
