Pool Play Wraps up at NAIA Softball National Championship

GULF SHORES, Ala. – Three days of pool play action wrapped up at the 2011 NAIA Softball National Championship Saturday as eight teams advance to double-elimination bracket play. The 31st annual event is being played at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

 

Eight teams will face off beginning with four games at 10 a.m. CDT Monday, with the winners facing each other and the losers squaring off at 12:30 p.m. Play continues through Wednesday with the National Championship final scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

 

Some games in the double-elimination bracket will be video-streamed live via NeuLion. Game 9 at 5:30 p.m. Monday will be the first of as many as seven games that will be available. Games 9 - 15, which may include the "if necessary" game, will be streamed for a subscription price of either $6.95 per day, or an event fee of $19.95. Click here for more information.

 

Pool Play Highlights

·         Three teams from the Southern States Athletic Conference made the eight-team bracket play: Belhaven (Miss.), Shorter (Ga.), William Carey (Miss.).

·         Simon Fraser (B.C.) became the first defending national champion not to make it to bracket play the following season since Oklahoma City won the 2007 title and did not advance to the 2008 eight-team bracket.

·         Oregon Tech becomes the first Cascade Collegiate Conference team since pool-play format in 2005 to advance to bracket play. The Owls are playing in their first overall event since 1997.

·         Three of the previous four national champions are competing in the eight-team bracket: Oklahoma City (2007), Lubbock Christian (Texas) (2008) and California Baptist (2009).

·         Oklahoma City reached the 100-win barrier in National Championship action. The Stars own the most wins in history with a 102-36 record in 25 appearances.

·         Five teams from last year are repeating a trip to bracket play: Belhaven (Miss.), California Baptist, Oklahoma City, Shorter (Ga.) and William Carey (Miss.).
