Munson Pitches Shorter (Ga.) Out Of Pool Play, Hawks Defeat Central Baptist (Ark.) 2-1

May 21, 2011

GULF SHORES, Ala.(Box Score) Shorter (Ga.) used a two-run sixth inning to beat Central Baptist (Ark.) and advance out of Pool E at the 2011 NAIA Softball National Championship.

Shorter will play at 10 a.m. CDT Monday against the winner of Pool D. Central Baptist ends its season with a 53-5 record.

Libby Munson (27-5) cruised in the circle for the Lady Hawks, limiting the Mustangs to one hit and one unearned tally in seven innings of dominant work. She struck out three and walked none.

She retired the first 12 batters she faced before a leadoff error in the fifth inning halted the perfecto.

A pair of hit-batsmen and a double in that same inning gave Central Baptist a 1-0 lead, but Munson induced a 1-2-3 double play to end the frame.

In the top half of the sixth, her offense backed her up with a pair of runs. Charlsie Broome and Jessica Womble started the inning with back-to-back singles, and they were brought home two batters later by Kara Pollock’s two-run double to left-center.

Pollock finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs for Shorter, while Broome went 1-for-2 with one run scored from the leadoff spot. Ashley Fair had Central Baptist’s lone hit and finished 1-for-3 with one RBI.

The tournament is being held at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex and the double-elimination bracket will take place Monday-Tuesday, with the championship game taking place Wednesday, May 25 at 12:30 p.m. CDT
