Defense and Pitching Carries Simpson (Calif.) to 2-1 Victory Over Reinhardt (Ga.) 2-1

GULF SHORES, Ala.(Box Score) Simpson (Calif.) (29-17) pitcher Whitney McCain fanned 10 batters and led the Red Hawks to a 2-1 victory against Reinhardt (Ga.) (40-10) in pool play action at the 2011 NAIA Softball National Championship. The 31st Annual event is taking place at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

 

McCain smothered offensive threats all day. She stranded eight Reinhardt base runners overall, including runners on first and second base to end the game. In the complete-game victory, she struck out 10 batters. She gave up one run on six hits and allowed four walks to move to 8-3 on the year.

 

Simpson got on the board first with a lone run in the first inning. Morgan Davis scored an unearned run as she came around to score on a single by Chelsea Dunn.

 

The Red Hawks went up 2-0 in the third inning courtesy of a Nicki Feuerbach RBI-single.

 

Reinhardt cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fifth inning. Nikki Roddy led off with a double to right field. She came around on a sacrifice fly by Andrea Thibaudeau.

 

Maddie Monroe took the loss by allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits in 6.0 innings. She struck out five and walked one.

 

Dunn and Brooke Downs each had two hits each for Simpson. Roddy and Cali Lovett led the Lady Eagles with a 2-for-3 performance at the dish.

 

Simpson will wrap up pool-play action with a contest against Simon Fraser (B.C.) Saturday at 9:30 a.m. CDT. Reinhardt takes on Lubbock Christian (Texas) at 2:30 p.m.
