Guess Leads Central Baptist (Ark.) Over Davenport (Mich.) 5-0
May 20, 2011
GULF SHORES, Ala. – (Box Score) Central Baptist (Ark.) (53-4) used its nation-leading home run offense to take out Davenport (Mich.) (38-17) 5-0 on day two of pool-play action at the 2011 NAIA Softball National Championship. The event is being held at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
With 130 home runs, which is the most in the NAIA in a single-season, the Mustangs got homers from Kayla Lucas and Carly McLennan. Those two roundtrippers, which were hit in the third and fourth innings, were plenty of run support for starting pitcher Emily Guess.
The freshman from Little Rock, Ark., had a perfect game after six innings. Davenport’s lead-off hitter in the seventh, Kelsey Egyhazi, laced a single to left to put the first Panther on the bases. Guess recorded 14 strikeouts and allowed no walks to improve to 13-0 on the season.
After Lucas handed Central Baptist a 2-0 lead on her 19th homer of the year, McLennan’s solo shot in the fourth added to the lead. The Mustangs put on the board a pair of runs in the fifth inning
McLennan finished 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored to lead the Mustangs. Lucas and Kayleigh Harriman each notched two hits apiece.
Karlee Despres, who went 4.0 innings, allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits. She dropped to 11-3 on the year for Davenport.
Central Baptist will take its 2-0 pool-play record into Saturday’s action against Shorter (Ga.) at 3:30 p.m. CDT. The Panthers will face Notre Dame (Ohio) at 10:30 a.m.
