Mashburn Holds Northwood (Texas) To Three Hits; Trevecca (Tenn.) Nazarene Wins 4-0

May 20, 2011

GULF SHORES, Ala.(Box Score) Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) (48-3) defeated Northwood (Texas) (37-15) 4-0 on day two of pool play at the 2011 NAIA Softball National Championship. The 31st annual event is being held at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

A pair of 20-game winners matched up in the circle, with Riley Mashburn (21-3) pitching the Trojans to victory by tossing a three-hit, complete-game shutout. She struck out seven and walked three while throwing 136 pitches. Larisa Garcia fell to 20-7 after giving up four unearned tallies on seven hits while going the distance.

Mashburn ran into trouble in the first, second, fourth and sixth innings as the Knights put two on the board in each of those frames, but she stranded each of those runners, including six in scoring position.

Three errors proved costly for the Knights of Northwood. A throwing error led to the first Trevecca run in the first inning and a one-out error in the fourth started a two-run rally for the Trojans as they tacked on some insurance runs. Breanna Zeis started that frame with a leadoff single and later came around on a throwing error. Heather Shuler dropped down a RBI-bunt single to cap the scoring in the inning.

Megan Schoenherr finished 2-for-3 at the dish for Northwood, while Karli Rush went 2-for-4 for Trevecca and Lauren Baker finished 1-for 2 with one RBI.

Trevecca Nazarene will battle Oregon Tech Saturday at 5:30 p.m. CDT and Northwood will face Midland (Neb.) at 12:30 p.m. to cap its pool play action.
