Olivet Nazarene Run-Rules Iowa Wesleyan To Improve To 2-0 In Pool Play
May 20, 2011
GULF SHORES, Ala. – (Box Score) Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) (50-11) run-ruled Iowa Wesleyan (18-35) 9-1 in five innings Friday in pool play action at the 2011 NAIA Softball National Championship. The 31st Annual event is taking place at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
Iowa Wesleyan struck first on Leigha Strong’s solo homer in the first inning, but that was all they would get against the pitching duo of Katie Hannagan and Kelly Blucker. Hannagan (27-7) picked up the win by limiting the Tigers to one run on three hits in four innings of work.
The Olivet offense, meanwhile, tallied nine runs on eight hits, with a six-run third inning proving to be the decisive blow. A leadoff walk and error set the stage for the outburst as the team batted around the order.
Jordan Reynolds started the scoring with a RBI-single, while Molly Anderson and Cheryl Sendzik each drove in two runs in the frame with a two-run single and two-run triple, respectively.
Anderson finished 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs, Hannah Gardner finished 3-for-3 and Sendzik finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Iowa Wesleyan will face William Woods (Iowa) Saturday at Noon CDT and Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) will battle William Carey (Miss.) at 5 p.m. in a matchup of 2-0 teams. Iowa Wesleyan is 0-2 in pool play.
