Box Score

GULF SHORES, Ala. – Third-ranked William Carey (Miss.) (51-6) run-ruled Iowa Wesleyan (18-34) 17-0 in five innings on day one of pool play action at the 2011 NAIA Softball National Championship Thursday at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. The 17 runs scored is four-shy of the all-time single-game championship record and the most since Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) notched 19 during the 2008 event.

William Carey’s pitching duo of Anna Ard and Alyssa Boutwell combined to hold the Tigers to a pair of hits. Conversely, the Lady Crusaders’ offense tallied 17 runs on 15 hits, with a 5-run first inning and 8-run third inning proving to be the big blows.

Ard improved to 28-2 on the season by fanning six in three innings of two-hit, shutout ball. At the dish, Judy Barber finished 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs, Sarah Beckman finished 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs and Jasmine Shelby finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs. Eight different Lady Crusader hitters tallied hits, including six who finished with multi-hit days.

Leigha Strong and Cari Smith each finished 1-for-2 at the plate for the Tigers.

William Carey started the game with a five-run first that was highlighted by Jeana Erickson’s two-run homer and Shelby’s two-run double. They continued to swing the bat and plated eight in the third frame on seven hits, as Barber had a three-run single and Beckman produced a three-run double.

William Carey battles William Woods (Mo.) on Friday at 9:30 am CDT on Field 4, while Iowa Wesleyan will look to bounce back against Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) at 2:30 pm on Field 4 in pool-play action.
