ADRIAN, Mich. – Davenport (Mich.) sophomore pitcher Sam Cole threw her first career no-hitter in game one of a doubleheader against Siena Heights (Mich.) (April 5). The Panthers defeated the host Saints 7-0 and 9-3 on the day to improve to 19-12 overall and 6-0 in conference play.
Davenport would use timely hitting in game one with DU scoring runs in both the second and third innings off RBI singles from Liz Veltman and Ali Dawson. Miscues in the fifth inning by Siena Heights would allow two more Panther runs to cross the plate and increase DU’s lead to 4-0.
WHAC Player of the Week Heather Brusokas would provide more insurance runs in the sixth inning with a deep three-run homerun to propel the Panthers to the 7-0 victory.
The story of the day however would go to starting pitcher Sam Cole. The sophomore from Belleville, Mich. would pitch her first career complete game no-hitter recording seven strikeouts on the day. She would only face three more hitters than the game minimum and post her eleventh win of the year.
Cole also posted a perfect game last year on March 3, 2010 against St. Catharine.
The Panthers would continue its winning ways in game two posting a 9-3 victory. DU would push runs across in four of the seven innings with fourteen hits in the game.
Offensively Davenport would be led by Ashlee Olsen who went 4/5 in game followed by Heather Brusokas’s three hits and Brianna Carpenter’s two. Seven different Panthers would pick up RBI’s with Karlee Depsres getting the victory on the mound.
The victories today push DU’s win streak to eleven with the Panthers returning to conference action again tomorrow. Davenport will travel across town to take on Cornerstone University in a 4:00pm doubleheader. Both live stats and live audio will be available.
