SCAD Savannah Upsets No. 12 Belhaven 9-6 Behind Home Run Barrage

JACKSON, Miss. – Jessaca Spears and Courtney Mienkina each smashed two home runs as the SCAD Savannah (Ga.) softball team upset No. 12 Belhaven (Miss.), 9-6 Saturday (Feb. 12) evening at Freedom Ridge Park.
The Bees improved to 4-2.
SCAD jumped up to a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run homer by Mienkina.
Belhaven responded with two runs in the bottom of the first and another in the third to take a 3-2 lead. Mienkina connected on a solo homer – her third of the season and 20th in her career – in the fourth to tie the game at 3.
The Crusaders retook the lead at 5-3 in the fifth as Annalee Carr and CeCee Austin supplied back-to-back RBI doubles. SCAD got a run back in the sixth on Spears’ first homer of the contest.
The Bees exploded for five runs – all coming with two outs - in their final at-bat in the seventh. SCAD took the lead for good at 6-5 on Nirana Singh’s two-run double. The Bees added some breathing room as Spears connected on a three-run homer to give SCAD a 9-5 advantage.
Sam White (2-1) earned the win in relief. She allowed just one run on three hits in 2 1/3 innings. Sarah Burns took the loss for Belhaven.
Earlier in the day, William Penn University defeated SCAD 3-1 as the Statesman scored twice in the sixth inning to break open a tie game. Lisa Williams (2-1) took the loss for the Bees despite striking out eight.
