May 22, 2010

DECATUR, Ala. - Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) and Simon Fraser (B.C.) earned wins in Pool C action on the second day of the 2010 NAIA Softball National Championship at Wilson Morgan Softball Complex Saturday.

Lindsey Wilson defeated Concordia (Ore.) 6-2 to improve its record to 46-14 and 1-1 in pool play. Concordia fell to 35-6, 1-1 with the loss. Morgan Paschall threw all seven innings for the Blue Raiders, giving up just two earned runs on three hits. Danielle Pulfrey suffered the loss for the Cavaliers with three earned runs and walked three. Concordia made the call to the bullpen after three straight walks by Pulfrey and Renee Santos entered in relief. Santos finsished the game and gave up three earned runs on eight hits, walked three and fanned 13.

The Blue Raiders took advantage of three walks, a hit batter and two wild pitches in the top of the first inning to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. A single by Jordan Gilland gave Lindsey Wilson its third run of the inning and a 3-0 advantage.

Two more runs would score in the top of the second to take a 5-0 lead. Jamie Williams singled left to drive in Alexis Rodgers and Gilland then hit a sac fly to score Williams. Gilland singled again in the top of the fifth and scored on a single by Anyibell Ramirez to go up 6-0.

Concordia loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth and got two runs back on a single by Cameron Way, but it wouldn't be enough as the next two batters struck out and grounded out to end the inning. Paschall retired the side to end the game.

A pair of Clan doubles and a sac fly brought in three runs in the top of the fourth inning to break open a 0-0 game and eventually lead Simon Fraser to a 4-0 win over Bellevue (Neb.). Jennifer Van Egdom threw a complete game, limiting the Bruins to two hits, to push the Clan to 2-0 in the pool and 23-14 this season.

Bellevue (32-16, 0-2) was able to put the ball in play off of Van Egdom, but was could not get the timely hit needed to push across runners across the plate and left six stranded base runners. Aly Bowers took the loss, giving up three earned runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings of work.

Four Simon Fraser batters drove in runs for a balanced offensive effort. Moir and Cicchetti doubled, Mayers had the sac fly and Haberl's single in the top of the seventh frame brought in Jessie Harris.

Katie Lefler and Allie Bartley each had a hit for Bellevue.

Pool play will conclude on Monday with Pool C showcasing Lindsey Wilson and Bellevue at 11:30 a.m., followed by Concordia (Ore.) and Simon Fraser at 4:30 p.m.
