No. 12 Shorter (Ga.) Rolls to a Sweep of Talladega

Feb. 24, 2010

ROME, Ga. – Bre Johnson and Jessica Womble each hit home runs and Libby Munson struck out seven in five complete innings as No. 12 Shorter College routed visiting Talladega College, 21-0, in game two of a double-header at Alto Park Softball Complex on Tuesday evening.

The Lady Hawks (8-0) won the first game of the two-game set, 16-0, to earn a sweep of the Tornadoes.

Womble led off Shorter's half of the first with her second homer of the season while Johnson's two-run blast to dead center in the fourth, also her second of the season, ignited a 14-run frame that sealed the win.

The Lady Hawks came two runs and two hits shy of tying a pair of single-game records. Shorter scored 23 runs on 25 hits in a victory over Suwanee on March 6, 2007.

Munson, who earned her fourth win of the year, went 4-for-4 at the plate with a trio of RBI and a pair of doubles. Emily Clements went 3-for-4 with four runs and an RBI, Womble finished 3-for-5 with two driven in and Tiffany Adams (2 RBI) and Johnson (3 RBI) each went 2-for-4 at the plate.

12 different Lady Hawks drove in a run in the nightcap.

In the opener, Adams went 3-for-3 with three RBI and Jessica Penney pitched five perfect innings as the Lady Hawks topped Talladega, 16-0.

Penney fanned 12 and walked none in improving to 3-0 on the season. The freshman's earned run average dipped to 0.81 and her strikeout total was three short of tying Shorter's single-game record of 15 shared by Munson and Missy Duke.

Adams' RBI single to shallow center plated two in the bottom of the second to stake the hosts a 4-0 lead. With the bases loaded in the fourth, Munson laced a bases-clearing double down the left field line to put Shorter ahead 8-0 and spark a 12-run frame that accounted for the final margin.

Munson finished with a team-high four RBI in game one.

Womble went 2-for-3 with four runs and a pair of RBI for the Lady Hawks, who saw their top three batters - Womble, Adams and Munson - go a combined 7-for-10 with nine RBI and eight runs scored.

Johnson, Elisabeth Barber, Dandi Ammons, Hannah Strength and Charlsie Broome recorded one RBI each for Shorter in the first match up of the day.

The Lady Hawks return to action this weekend, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26 and 27, as they host five games as part of the Shorter College Softball Invitational.
