A.K.A. 5K Run Draws Community Together

A.K.A. 5K Run Draws Community Together

Nov. 17, 2009

DICKINSON, N.D. - After the tragic loss of schoolmates Ashley Neufeld, Kyrstin Gemar and Afton Williamson, the Dickinson State University (N.D.) cross country team decided to take action by organizing a 5K road race with the proceeds going to their families.

The event was held on Nov. 14 at Dickinson State University. The friendly, generous atmosphere on a sunny, but cool, afternoon were pleasant factors as nearly 70 participants wound their way through neighborhood streets of Dickinson. A lead vehicle guided the front pack and cross country team members directed the field--runners, joggers and walkers--at various intersections. There were a few entrants who brought along their dogs or baby strollers, most people brought several friends, but everyone was in good spirits.

There were T-shirts commemorating the lives of the three student-athletes and a raffle was held as many local businesses made donations. The participants made their presence felt as more than $1,000 was raised for the families of Neufeld, Gemar and Williamson.

The Blue Hawks cross country team would like to extend its thanks to all participants and sponsors for your time and valuable energy in making this event worthwhile. With success like this event was, it is sincerely hoped that the "A.K.A. 5K Run" can become an annual family event.
