No. 3 Lubbock Christian Sweeps SB Doubleheader With No. 21 Southern Nazarene

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 3 Lubbock Christian (Texas) University Lady Chaparrals softball team had a come-from-behind 3-2 victory in a doubleheader opener against No. 21 Southern Nazarene (Okla.) University and then cruised in the second game 8-0 to sweep the Sooner Athletic Conference series Friday afternoon (April 10) at PlainsCapital Park.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning and with just three hits against pitcher Andrea Pare, the Chaps received a single from Sabby Hernandez and Honda Rodriguez hit a two-run home run to give the Lady Chaps a 3-2 lead. They were able to hold on for the win and Lady Chaps pitcher Alyssa Gutierrez was able to improve to 19-2 in the circle. LCU maneuvered their way through several jams in the win. SNU left 12 runners stranded in the opener.
In the second game, the Lady Chaps benefited off of a seven-run third inning highlighted by seven hits and a Ginalee Davis three-run home run. The game ended early in the fifth inning when Rodriguez hit an RBI single with one out to place the score at 8-0 and activate the mercy rule. Kelly Griego improved to 17-1 with the win in the circle, pitching five scoreless innings and holding the Crimson Storm to just three hits. Griego herself had three hits and the plate in a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, which included a triple.
The Lady Chaps improved to 39-4 on the season and are 14-4 in the SAC to move within two games of conference co-leaders St. Gregory’s and Oklahoma City University with two games-in-hand over St. Gregory’s and four games-in-hand over Oklahoma City University. LCU returns to action Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. with a doubleheader against University of the Southwest at PlainsCapital Park.
