Feb. 22, 2009

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University softball team went 1-2 in the final day of action at the Cowtown Classic.  The Rams fell 9-1 to USAO and then topped Kansas Wesleyan 13-5 before falling 9-0 to Evangel Univeristy in the semifinals of the consolation bracket.  The win over KWU marked the 103rd of head coach Shannon Gower’s career, marking a new Texas Wesleyan record.

Gower has posted 103 wins in her five-year career, surpassing Carol Pierce’s (1996-99) mark of 102.

In the morning match, the Drovers put up four runs on four hits in the second inning.  They took advantage of a pair of Texas Wesleyan miscues to score three more in the fifth.

The Rams got on the board with an RBI single from Alexa Burgert in the sixth, but USAO capped the scoring with a two-run home run off the bat of Rosalinda Campos in the bottom of the sixth.

Ashley Tarrant (1-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits in two innings pitched.

Against Kansas Wesleyan, the Coyotes got on the board first with an RBI double from Aimee Fisher in the second inning.  In the bottom of the frame, Hopie Perez led off with a single and then advanced all the way to third on a bunt single from Hayley Butler.  A ground ball from Ashleigh Jiminez plated Perez.  With two outs, Shawna Henderson ripped a bases clearing triple and scored on a wild pitch to give the Rams a 5-1 lead.

The Coyotes took advantage of three Texas Wesleyan errors to score four runs and tie the game in the top of the third.  Whitney Baker drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the third and scored on a base hit from Taylor Wood to put the Rams back on top, 6-5.

In the fifth, the Rams took advantage of four Coyotes errors to score five runs and bring the score to 11-5.  The Rams got RBI singles from Henderson and Haley Butler and a two-run single from Lauren Biffle during the rally.

Perez led off the sixth with a solo homer and the Rams ended the game with a sac fly from Biffle.

Taylor Wood (1-3) earned the win after allowing five runs, one earned, on seven hits in five innings of work.  Henderson went 3-for-4 with four RBI in the win.  Butler also went 3-for-4 while Perez and Biffle each added a pair of hits.

Evangel used a big second inning to sink the Rams.  After scoring a pair in the first inning, the Crusaders used a pair of home runs amongst six hits to plate seven runs in the second.
