May 22, 2007
Three Runs in First Inning Prove Enough for Victory
Region II Champion California Baptist scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to secure another contest in the tournament. In the bottom of the first inning, center fielder Sara Goforth (1-for-3) led off the inning with a single, later scoring on a sacrifice fly by senior Geanie Jenkins (0-for-2). Junior Chantal Millard continued to improve her batting statistics with a single to left field. In the tournament Millard (1-for-3) has three home runs and seven RBI. Millard and Nikki Lowe (1-for-2) later scored on single by designated player Erin Moore (2-for-2).
Amy Thomas earns the victory for the Lancers to improve her season record to 28-2 with seven innings pitched, six strikeouts, and one earned run. Currently in the tournament, Thomas has 27 strikeouts in 30 innings pitched with a 0.47 earned run average.
In the loss for Trevecca, the Trojans scored one run in the top of the fifth inning which would not prove enough to remain in the hunt for the 2007 national title. Thomas held the Trojans to just two hits, one by left fielder Jennifer Perkins (1-for-2) and third baseman Sammy Simon (1-for-3). Perkins currently ranks eighth in batting average for the tournament and tenth in hits.
TranSouth Pitcher of the Year Brittany Johnson suffered the loss for Trevecca, dropping her overall season record to 42-7. Johnson pitched six complete innings of play with five strikeouts and three earned runs.
California Baptist advances to face Simon Fraser University (B.C.) at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
