Houston Baptist University edged Shorter College 3-1

at 2007 NAIA Softball National Championship

                                                                                             

DECATUR, Ala. - Houston Baptist University defeated Shorter College 3-1 in Pool C action Saturday (May 19) afternoon at the 2007 NAIA Softball National Championship being played at Wilson Morgan Park.

 

The No. 6 Huskies improved to 48-11 overall and to 3-1 in pool play while the No. 9 Hawks fell to 44-11 and 1-2. Shorter will conclude pool play with 8 p.m. contest against Bethel (Ind.) College tonight.

 

Houston Baptist scored twice in the fourth inning against Shorter starter Missy Duke (23-7). Cheri Wood, who limited the Hawks to just three hits, helped herself at the plate as she smashed a solo homer to left field.  Erika Vargas drove in the other run with her bunt single.

 

The Huskies added another run in the fifth on Hannah Garza's single up the middle to take a 3-0 lead. Shorter got a run back on a solo homer to left by Jessica Sanders in the sixth.
